Summary:
"In this video, Cheri Marmarosh, PhD, invites Martyn Whittingham, PhD, to introduce his model for focused brief group therapy (FBGT). Drs. Cheri Marmarosh and Martyn Whittingham initially discuss the important elements of the model along with the use of assessment tools in FBGT before providing two demonstration videos. The first demonstration illustrates a pregroup preparation session with a client who presents as uninhibited and is experiencing difficulty establishing close interpersonal relationships. The client states that they tend to overshare with others, which pushes others away from them. In the demonstration, Dr. Martyn Whittingham makes use of intake forms and engages in goal calibration with the client to gain a better sense of the client's personal goals and larger fit within the group. After the pre-group demonstration, Dr. Martyn Whittingham discusses the importance of establishing a bond, task agreement, and goal agreement between the therapist and client. A second demonstration features the full group session with additional group members. This demonstration includes a group of four people who are joining the group to enhance their interpersonal relationships and communication. All of the group members share their personal goals at the beginning of session. In the demonstration video, the group members also offer support and feedback to one another. Following the demonstrations of the pre-group preparation session and the full group session, Drs. Cheri Marmarosh and Martyn Whittingham identify and discuss important clips from the sessions. They discuss the use of metaphor, the creation of a therapeutic bond, and the integration of cultural factors as well. The demonstrations in this video feature actors portraying clients on the basis of a composite of cases
