- Summary:
- Dr. Shalonda Kelly integrates cognitive-behavioral, emotionally focused, multicultural, and family systems approaches in her work with a young, religious, African American married couple. The couple are seeking counseling due to strain in their relationship after the husband had an affair. The wife, who works while attending college, struggles with depression, and strives to approach and work through conflicts in order to maintain their relationship. The husband tends to avoid and minimize his emotional experience in order to preserve their relationship. Kelly facilitates the couples' understanding and empathy for one another by exploring these respective communication strategies and their familial origins. Kelly then highlights how both clients have learned to be strong and independent, which leads to them often missing the opportunity to connect with one another. Throughout the session, Kelly bolsters the client's strengths by exploring their religious values, family values, gender roles, and the central role of their racial and ethnic identities in an empathic manner. The couple appear hopeful and optimistic when Kelly discusses integrating prayer as a component of their treatment. Kelly asks about how the couple began their relationship, and emphasizes the positive aspects of their relationship in order to prepare them for the difficult work of therapy. In conclusion, Kelly discusses what treatment will entail going forward, and how they will work together to create a new narrative around infidelity and to help the couple to rely on one another adaptively
