Summary:
Dr. Linda A. Reddy, along with her assistant, conduct a play group session with two girls and one boy. The unspoken goal for the session is to teach social skills to the children. First, they review the group goals: Follow directions, keep hands, feet, and mouth to yourself, and use your words to express your thoughts and feelings. Dr. Reddy tells the group that taking a time out if feeling overwhelmed or frustrated is a good thing, and shows them the time-out seat, which they can access at any time during the session. They play two role-play games about asking for and offering help. They discuss when they have asked for or given help in the past and discuss the steps for asking for and offering help before doing the role plays. Then, they take a stretching break, and Dr. Reddy demonstrates how to tell if their arms are relaxed. They next play a game involving listening skills and asking for and giving help. They discuss afterwards what they needed to do to succeed in the game and how they felt at various times during the game. At the end, each child reviews whether she or he met the group goals during the session, and Dr. Reddy hands out stickers and prizes
