Summary:
Dr. Charles J. Gelso conducts a single session with a young White woman in her 20s dealing with feelings of inadequacy and social anxiety. The client begins by discussing her lack of confidence and her constant worry about how others perceive her. Using an integrative psychodynamic approach, Dr. Gelso helps the client realize that she minimizes her own strengths and achievements. They explore the conflict between the client's strong bond with her family and her concern that this bond prevents her from achieving more for herself. They also explore the client's self-critical side and how this part of her has caused her to compare herself to others, both currently and in the past. They discuss the qualities in a therapist the client would look for, should she continue psychotherapy. At the end of the session, they explore the client's ambivalence about changing and her fear that giving up her self-critical side will fundamentally change her. Dr. Gelso theorizes that change needs to come from inside rather than changing her external situation, and he encourages her to take small steps towards change
