Summary:
Dr. Abigail Levrini condenses three sessions of ADHD coaching into one initial session with an African American adult male client. She uses the first 15 minutes to conduct an abbreviated intake and introduction session in which she illustrates that behavioral theory underlies ADHD coaching and also explains the process of the intervention. Using a Coaching Topics Survey assessment she determines that the primary presenting problems for her client are time management and anxiety. In the next 15 minutes she and her client identify long-term goals for treatment as well as due dates for goal completion. The client endorses that ideal long-term goals would be to establish routines to improve time management and to reduce stress and anxiety. Dr. Levrini asks the client to identify a reward for goal completion. The client determines that throwing a party would be a suitable reward. In the final 15 minutes she and her client determine weekly objectives for treatment. Weekly objectives are steps toward achieving long-term goals that are concrete. In this case, the client agreed to use a planner to record his daily schedule as a means to improve time management. He will also keep a journal to record his negative self-talk and how it is related to anxiety. Dr. Levrini explains that in further sessions they will reflect on his weekly objectives and use behavior modification strategies. They will also regularly monitor anxiety symptoms. Dr. Levrini ends the session by summarizing the plan for treatment and providing support to her client by suggesting how he can reframe his ADHD diagnosis in a positive way
