Summary:
Dr. Amy Wenzel conducts a psychotherapy session with a young Hispanic woman who wants to improve her self-confidence. The client reports some work related anxiety, as well as feeling that her parents are not proud of her. Dr. Wenzel psychoeducates the client about the processes of cognitive behavior therapy and engages her in developing a cognitive model of her feelings of low self-confidence. She asks the client to identify the specific thoughts and emotions that arise in work situations and the related core beliefs. She uses cognitive restructuring to help the client to question underlying core beliefs, such as that she is not good enough. She gives the client a homework assignment to record an evidence log of her work performance. Dr. Wenzel also encourages reframing the belief that her parents are not proud, by asking her to consider the viewpoint of her parents, and suggesting that there is a lack of communication rather than a lack of pride. She helps the client to develop a detailed plan for engaging each parent individually in a positive conversation. She requests that the client also record positive parental engagement in her evidence log. At the end of the session, Dr. Wenzel encourages the client to continue to use cognitive restructuring and the evidence log as tools to improve self-confidence
