- Summary:
- Dr. Christopher R. Martell conducts a couples therapy intake session with a gay Black couple. The couple have been dating for six months, and report that some of their conflict may be due to their age difference; one client is 60 years old and the other client is 24 years old. Dr. Martell initiates the session by asking the couple to describe the history of their relationship and to report their presenting conflict. The couple reports difficulty with communication, mainly that one member of the couple becomes overly agitated in conflict while the other feels that his partner is non-responsive and therefore invalidating. The couple describes recent arguments in detail. Dr. Martell uses active listening to evince from the couple that their communication barrier arises from their differing communication styles. He ends the session by suggesting that moderating their respective communication styles may help to improve relationship satisfaction
