Summary:
Laura S. Brown meets with a married woman in her thirties who would like to understand patterns of behavior formed in her childhood. Both parents were withholding of affection. This led her to believe that something was wrong with her and resulted in difficulties establishing trust and communication with others. Her parents' relationship with each other was volatile and characterized by suppressed violence. In later years, the violence was manifested when her father murdered her first husband. Brown guides the client to experience her childhood feelings and enlist the protection of her adult self in assuring the child that she has value. Brown works to empower the client to identify her own strength and confirm the utility of her survivor skills while urging her to trust in her power to distinguish safety from danger and to experiment with trusting others
