Summary:
Clinical psychologist Dr. Bob Knight conducts an individual psychotherapy session with an 82-year-old Caucasian female client. The client presents with concerns relating to adjustment and stress of caring for a husband who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease 5 years earlier. The therapist draws on contextual adult life span theory for adapting psychotherapy (CAPTAL) in exploring the client's experiences and emotions in the context of life changes relating to her caregiver role and her husband's declining condition. Dr. Knight attends to the client's physical and emotional functioning and inquires about her resources for social and emotional support in the face of stressful life changes. From a culturally sensitive perspective, the therapist respects the client's natural self-reliance while encouraging her to consider therapeutic resources that may help in managing current and future stressors arising from caregiving responsibilities at a time when she is facing adjustment to aging in herself
