Summary:
Dr. Christopher R. Martell conducts a therapy session with a gay interracial couple in their early 20s. The couple reports being satisfied with their relationship, however, both members are in varying stages of disclosing their homosexuality to family and friends, leading to conflict about the rate at which they should disclose. Neither has disclosed to their parents and both expect that their parents may react negatively. Because the couple has not publicly acknowledged their relationship, their time together is limited to specific settings or to hiding affectionate displays in public. In addition, one partner, who is White, is anxious that his mother will discriminate against his African American partner. Dr. Martell uses active listening to reflect that failure to acknowledge their relationship can lead to feelings of invalidation. He acknowledges their current relationship satisfaction, and encourages the couple to consider how their future satisfaction may change if they continue to disagree on how and when to disclose their relationship. Finally, he offers suggestions for improving their communication skills, such as setting aside certain times to discuss their relationship satisfaction
