- Summary:
- In their first session together, Dr. Debbie Joffe Ellis works with an African American single mother with depression. The client reports difficulty in managing symptoms of depression while being a single mother and working full time. The client also reports that she has a chronic illness, lupus, which interferes with her daily functioning. Dr. Ellis uses rational emotive behavior therapy to point out some underlying false beliefs that the client holds, such as a negative self-perception, that lead to depression. She utilizes a role playing exercise to help the client practice the experience of saying no to someone else. She encourages the client to restructure cognitive schemas that lead to feelings of guilt, schemas such as the client "should" always be happy. At the end of the session, Dr. Ellis assigns homework to record all the "should" thoughts that the client has throughout the week. She asks the client to restructure those thoughts in a way that will not encourage guilt or self-blame. She explains that deepening insight and increasing acceptance will help to alleviate symptoms of depression
