Summary:
Dr. Debbie Joffe Ellis conducts a psychotherapy session with a single mother of two teenagers. The client complains of insomnia at first, and states that insomnia is the only problem that she feels is an issue. Dr. Ellis uses an active listening approach to elicit from the client that her insomnia is fueled by financial stress, school-related stress, and guilt related to lack of time spent with her children. Dr. Ellis uses rational emotive behavior therapy to point out that the client's guilt is unhelpful and unhealthy. Dr. Ellis also questions the client's perception that school-related stress and financial stress are unending. Dr. Ellis then attempts to find the belief behind the client's feelings. Throughout the session, the client exhibits resistance to the psychotherapeutic process by frequent attempts to change the topic, and refusal to exhibit emotion. Dr. Ellis works to continuously bring the client's attention back to the matter at hand, stressing the important of positive, healthy thinking. At the end of the session, Dr. Ellis suggests that the client continue to work to monitor her thinking
