Summary:

In this session with an aged female client, Dr. Dolores Gallagher-Thompson uses CBT to examine the client's occupational aspirations. The client reports that she is eager to begin writing a novel, but that she struggles to take action toward achieving this goal. She attributes her inability to begin work to a lack of organization. Dr. Gallagher-Thompson uses a diagram to organize the client's thoughts and emotions pertaining to this task, and to uncover thought errors that prevent the client from writing. Together Dr. Gallagher-Thompson and the client develop a thought record in which they identify negative thoughts related to the client's goal, as well as alternative thoughts that counteract the negative thoughts. By using the thought record, the client identifies a first step that she can take toward obtaining her goal. Dr. Gallagher-Thompson ends the session with a brief summary of what was identified in the session and she gives the client a copy of the thought record to use as a tool toward taking the first step
