- Summary:
- The therapist works with a married woman in her thirties who has been suffering from bulimia for the past 19 years and wants help in overcoming the behavior. The client explains that she practices binge-eating and purging to regulate her weight and has only been able to control it during her pregnancies. In this, the last of six sessions, the therapist and client assess her progress to date. The client notes that she has gained more control over her bulimia and is more often able to resist the behavior. She feels that she is less perfectionistic than previously and notes that journaling has been helpful. The client and therapist discuss the ramifications of her revealing her bulimia to others, noting the importance of secrecy and isolation in order for bulimia to thrive. They discuss with whom the client might be comfortable in discussing bulimia, and the client mentions her interest in joining or starting a support group. Finally, implications of her increased assertiveness for her relationship with her husband are discussed
