- Summary:
- In this first of six sessions, the therapist works with a married woman in her thirties who has been suffering from bulimia for the past 19 years and wants help in overcoming the behavior. The client explains that she practices binge-eating and purging to regulate her weight and that she has only been able to control it during her pregnancies. The therapist elicits detailed information about the behavior, the client's concerns, her family background, and key events in her life. Referring to bulimia in the third person, as something separate from the client, the therapist focuses the client's attention on times when she has drawn on personal strengths to moderate the behavior or to reach other goals. In this way, he helps the client gain understanding of the dynamics of bulimic behavior
