Summary:
Counseling psychologist Dr. Clara E. Hill conducts a dream session with a middle-aged White woman using Dr. Hill's cognitive-experiential dream model. The client presents a recurring dream she has had at least annually since the time she was 6 years old. In the session, Dr. Hill first takes a client-centered approach to help the client explore four key images of the dream. Next Dr. Hill takes a psychodynamic approach to help the client clarify her observations about the dream and to reach insight on what the dream means in the client's adult life. Dr. Hill explores what the client has learned about herself from the dream, and finally, they discuss what changes the client would like to make as a result of her new insights. Thus the cognitive-experiential dream model uses an integrative approach in working with dreams in psychotherapy. The client learns she has greater understanding of herself than she previously thought, that she enjoys stability in life, and that the different experiences of this recurring dream align with what is occurring in her waking life
