- Dr. Patricia A. Areán begins problem-solving therapy with a 62-year old woman struggling with anxiety. The client presents with difficulty sleeping, a lack of energy, and irritability, and states that these anxiety symptoms are exacerbated when something major is happening in her life. The client is planning a trip to China and her symptoms have recently grown worse. Dr. Areán first inquires about the client's present life circumstances such as familial relationships, job status, and finances. Then they discuss the client's history with anxiety symptoms, medications, and talk therapy in order to gain a better understanding of how the past informs the client's current state. For the remainder of the session, they work through the client's specific concern about the food she will eat in China. They determine a specific goal for the problem, brainstorm strategies to resolve the problem, develop pros and cons for each strategy, and create an action plan for what strategies the client will try to use to combat the problem. As homework, Dr. Areán suggests that the client take notes on how each solution affects her mood, irritability, and other anxiety symptoms such as ability to sleep and biting her nails. Additionally, Dr. Areán suggests the client practice these steps with other specific concerns about the trip. At the end of the session, the client states that in the past her worry prevented her from finding solutions to her problems. However, after this session she now feels more relieved and thinks this approach of identifying a specific problem and developing solutions for it is helpful for those struggling with anxiety, like her
