Summary:
Dr. Peter C. Costello conducts a session of attachment-based therapy with a middle-aged African American male client who is concerned about his pattern of both switching jobs and ending relationships prematurely. In the beginning of the session they discuss the client's interpersonal relations at work, focusing on how the client does not think his coworkers are trustworthy, which provokes him to want to leave. Dr. Costello then inquires about the client's current romantic relationship. The client indicates he feels happy and comfortable with his partner, and he wants to remain with her because she has grown close with his young daughter of whom he is the primary caretaker. However, the client gets irritated with some of their interactions and questions if the relationship will last. Dr. Costello then focuses on the client's early life experiences, examining his relationship with his mother and the ways in which he was physically disciplined. Dr. Costello interprets the client's pattern of quitting things prematurely to be the result of the client having difficulty getting close to others. Together, Dr. Costello and the client come to the conclusion that in the future it will be important to examine what happens internally when he departs from others. Furthermore, Dr. Costello suggests that the client examine what is driving him to want to be alone, connecting the pieces of how he was treated as a child to how he feels in relationships now
