Summary:
Dr. Rhonda N. Goldman conducts an emotion-focused therapy session with a woman in her late thirties who is struggling to resolve the disappointment she feels toward her mother. The client revisits painful memories from her early childhood including the domestic violence she witnessed, exposure to her parents' alcoholism, and numerous times where she felt abandoned and had to take care of herself and her parents. Using empty-chair technique, Dr. Goldman has the client express her feelings toward her mother in session. As the client talks to her mother, Dr. Goldman has her focus on what is happening internally with her emotions as well as physiological sensations. At the end of the session, the client realizes she needs validation from her mother for how much she has accomplished in life despite her troubled upbringing
