- Summary:
- During this first session of emotion-focused therapy, Dr. Sandra C. Paivio uses empty-chair technique with an African American female client who wishes to examine her emotions regarding her relationship with her mother. The client discusses how she was neglected, verbally abused, and physically abused by her mother as a child. Although the client has come to terms with some of the ways her mother treated her, she still desires her mother's acknowledgement of the abuse as well as her mother's reassurance that she is worthy. Using empty-chair technique, Dr. Paivio has the client express these desires to her mother. Dr. Paivio has the client pay close attention to how she is feeling internally so that she can more deeply understand the emotions underlying this issue. At the end of the session, the client feels reinvigorated and willing to address these issues with her mother as well as to not give up on the relationship
