Summary:
In this first of six sessions with Dr. Leslie S. Greenberg, a female client complains of sadness over feeling unvalued and unrecognized by her husband. The client has been an at-home mother to the couple's two young children, but recently she has been working a part-time job. The client's new job has only added to her husband's ongoing criticism for neglecting their home's upkeep. Intimacy has also been an issue for several years because the husband usually stays late at the office--well after the client has gone to bed. The client feels "trapped": Emotionally, she knows that she needs to leave the marriage. Practically, she knows that leaving the marriage would be a huge disruption in her and her children's lives. The supportive advice the client receives from two friends further complicates her decision. A close female friend advises the client to rely on her religion and spiritual values, while a close male friend emphasizes the practical (financial considerations, et cetera) Dr. Greenberg asks the client to think about her upbringing and discuss her family needs then and now. He then embarks on a therapeutic tack of getting the client to frame her decision about leaving the marriage in terms of balancing such needs against her emotional clarity regarding the decision
