- Summary:
- During this session of emotion-focused therapy, Dr. Shari M. Geller works with a Black, female client who is experiencing distress related to multiple events in her life including the incarceration of two of her children, the recent deaths of her son and mother, and the difficult balance between taking care of her own needs and the needs of others. Together, Dr. Geller and the client explore the meaning of pain and vulnerability for the client, and the client's reluctance to share these emotions with others. Because the client has been the pillar of strength for everyone in her life, it is hard for her to let go of this role and allow herself to feel her pain. Throughout the session, Dr. Geller pauses to focus on the here and now for the client, asking her what emotions are present and what physical sensations are tied to these emotions. Through Dr. Geller's compassion and acceptance, the client is more able to be open about her pain and vulnerability. At the end of the session, Dr. Geller suggests that the client allow herself to feel her pain, and to show herself the same compassion she has shown others in her life. The client expresses a sense of relief from being able to share her painful experiences with Dr. Geller
