- Summary:
- Dr. James A. Mulick works with a middle-age woman whose 14-year-old son has Autism. She explains his skills and limitations and the techniques they have used to teach him how to become more independent and take care of himself. They discuss the picture exchange communication system, in which the boy learns to associate pictures with certain activities and places. The boy's score on the Scales of Independent Behavior-Revised indicates that he has no major behavior problems and only stereotyped behavior. They discuss his progress over the years and Mulick suggests ways to further enhance the boy's skills and what needs to be done to take him to a higher level of independence. He suggests that they look into purchasing a PDA with a GPS to help him when he becomes agitated, to teach him to take his own pictures for the picture exchange communication system and other activities to help him move further toward independence
