- Summary:
- Dr. Susan M. McCurry conducts a contextual therapy session with a woman in her thirties who recently had her mother with dementia move in with her. In the beginning of the session, Dr. McCurry and the client discuss how the client came to the decision to have her mother move in and to be her primary caretaker. Because the client is feeling a heavy financial burden and that she is sacrificing an important time in her life, she is struggling to handle this caregiving role. Since the client is certain she does not want her mother to move into a nursing home, Dr. McCurry and the client discuss ways to handle the stressful behaviors her mother engages inches Specifically, they discuss how to pay attention to the antecedents and consequences of her mother's troublesome behaviors with hopes that changing these antecedents and consequences will result in a behavior change. At the end of the session, Dr. McCurry highlights the importance of searching for other resources and people to help the client with this caregiving role so that her caregiving is sustainable and not detrimental to her well-being
