Summary:
Dr. Robert A. Neimeyer continues therapy with a woman in her 40s whose father has recently died. She is having problems with depression, anxiety, and feeling overwhelmed by her grief. Dr. Neimeyer checks with her to see if her situation has changed over the past week, and it has remained about the same. She has been having problems with her mother, since her mother has been bringing her boyfriend to family functions where the client feels it is inappropriate, and when she expresses her wishes they are ignored. The client and her mother have never resolved issues that began when she was a teenager, and her mother is not interested in counseling to repair their relationship. She feels a disconnect - that most people don't understand her continued grief, and that she feels "in a fish bowl", where she can see what is going on, but not participate in life fully. She also feels the need to grieve alone because she doesn't want to be a continued burden. Dr. Neimeyer encourages her to journal about her feelings so that they can discuss them in depth at the next session
