Summary:
Dr. Jon Carlson begins therapy with a middle aged woman who wants to learn better coping skills for dealing with stress. In the last year, her mother passed away, she has gotten married, been diagnosed with a rare cancer, been caring for her daughter's children who were diagnosed with chronic health problems, and her daughter was recently in a debilitating car accident. She feels as though she can take no more stress and wants to find ways to better deal with stress in her life. She is especially worried as her daughter was her main caregiver when she was at her sickest, and now she is severely injured and is going to need rehabilitation and extensive care. Dr. Carlson discusses with her that she is under a lot of stress right now, but that so far she has been coping well and probes for coping strategies that she has used up to this point. She talks about how she is used to taking care of others and not used to slowing down, and now she has to slow down some and have others help her because of her illness. She mentions her faith, and she and Dr. Carlson discuss her beliefs regarding spirituality and suffering. They also discuss the fact that she has a large support network, which she should turn to more often for help when she needs it. They discuss what she can do to help abate her stress levels, and she says she will see if they help before the next session
