Summary:

Dr. Robert A. Neimeyer begins therapy with a woman in her 40s whose father has recently died. She is having problems with depression, anxiety, and feeling overwhelmed by her grief. When Dr. Neimeyer asks her what she would like to talk about and sort through, the client directs the sessions toward her difficulty dealing with recent losses in her life, (friend died a few months ago and sister's fiancée died a year ago), and her flat and blank feeling when she is not depressed. Dr. Neimeyer seeks information regarding her background with her father and her family, and learns that she is not his biological daughter but was raised as his daughter. Discussion of the client's and family's history with alcohol abuse is also mentioned. She had reconciled with her father and had a good relationship with him; her relationship with her mother is strained. She is recently married, and has gone through recovery and counseling for her alcohol abuse. Dr. Neimeyer guides her in some empty chair role playing, which helps facilitate her expression of grief at losing her father and missing his presence in her life
