Summary:
Jeffrey J. Magnavita demonstrates his personality-guided relational psychotherapeutic approach with an adult woman in an ongoing abusive and toxic relationship with her mother. The client seeks help with asserting herself toward her mother while ending her pattern of displacement on to her own daughter. In this fifth session, Magnavita guides the client through a therapeutic turning point to allow her to grieve the loss of not having a nurturing relationship with her mother while ending the cycle of abuse with her own daughter. The client reports that standing up for herself recently resulted in improved relations with her mother. Magnavita reinforces that the client's sense of filial responsibility has created a pattern of capitulation and instructs the client to reclaim her power through assertiveness techniques and mantra repetition
