- Dr. Jon Carlson begins therapy with a female client who is seeking help with trust issues, especially involving men. She has had a problem trusting men throughout her life, and this has grown worse since her husband of 5 years cheated on her last year. They have been in couples counseling for the marriage, but she believes she needs more focused therapy to deal with her inability to trust. Dr. Carlson asks about her background and finds that the client's female relatives, especially her mother, have enforced the idea that men are untrustworthy, and this was evidenced by the behavior of her father, who was undependable and cheated. Dr. Carlson also asks her to look at her marriage from her husband's perspective regarding her attitude of distrust. This leads to discussions on what it would mean for her emotionally to allow herself to trust, and the fact that her distrust has created a protective, yet isolating wall
