- Summary:
- Using a personality-guided relational psychotherapy approach, Jeffrey J. Magnavita works with a female client in her late teens experiencing major depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder resulting from child abuse and ongoing instability and chaos in her life. In their third session together, Magnavita addresses her self-defeating and avoidant personality patterns as well as the cognitive schema that prevents her from openly expressing herself emotionally. Magnavita uses biofeedback to gauge the client's physiological responses to stress and encourages her to practice deep breathing for improved emotional regulation. The client also addresses her transference of her issues with male dominance and control on to Magnavita, who encourages her to work on her relationships with men and difficulties with intimacy in a safe setting
