- Summary:
- Thomas A. Parham works with a female client who is concerned about the degree of control and excessive responsibility she has taken on in her life. As a young girl, she affiliated closely with her father and learned to help him by monitoring and controlling the behavior of her siblings. She is now ready to give up some of that control. Parham questions her to affirm the functionality of her strategy as a child and to learn more about the circumstances and thoughts that make giving it up a challenge. He works with the client to enhance her awareness of the connection between thoughts and feelings and to question automatic thoughts that are rigid and maintain the status quo. He ends by coaching the client on the process of change and on how to engage in positive self-talk
