- Summary:
- In this first session of six, Dr. Amy Wenzel uses cognitive behavioral therapy to work with a 24-year-old man who is struggling with anxiety and mild depression, both of which are affecting his academic performance and behavior at work. Following a brief intake, Dr. Wenzel discusses the client's presenting concerns and experiences in relation to a cognitive-behavioral therapy model. They discuss how several formative experiences have potentially yielded core beliefs and underlying rules and assumptions, which can manifest in the client's automatic patterns of negative thinking. Dr. Wenzel and the client collaboratively identify ways in which he relies on avoidance as a compensatory strategy in his academic and work life, and she assigns him a thought record to be completed and discussed in the following session. They conclude the session by setting goals for what he wants to accomplish in therapy
