Summary:
In this fourth session of six, Dr. Amy Wenzel uses cognitive behavior therapy to work with a 24-year-old man who is struggling with anxiety and mild depression, both of which are affecting his academic performance and behavior at work. They begin the session by reviewing both the thought record and the success log from the previous week. The client reports a number of successful experiences in which he overcame anxiety and avoidance in his academic, work, and personal life. Dr. Wenzel introduces additional aspects of the thought record, asking the client to begin thinking about and constructing alternative responses to some of the maladaptive automatic thoughts, and then to reflect on possible outcomes. Together, Dr. Wenzel and the client take several anxiety-provoking experiences included in his thought record (e.g., car troubles, poor exam grade, fear of judgment when exercising) and work to overcome the cognitive distortions by constructing alternative responses to each situation. They then apply the model to several upcoming situations that could trigger anxiety and/or depression, and collaborate to develop goals and action plans to help the client manage those experiences rather than relying on avoidance
