Summary:
Dr. Robert D. Enright conducts forgiveness therapy with a young, adult, African American female client who wants to forgive her cousin after a family conflict. After eliciting the client's definition of forgiveness, Enright briefly explains what forgiveness therapy is. Enright explores the client's feelings of woundedness and other reactions toward her cousin. Next, Enright suggests to the client that it is helpful to think of her cousin in a broader sense outside of the incident. Specifically, Enright guides the client in increasing empathy and compassion for herself and her cousin by thinking about the cousin's own woundedness. Enright and the client then examine the intensity of the client's negative emotions after looking at her cousin outside of the conflict. Finally, Enright suggests homework for the client so she can continue on her journey toward forgiveness
