- Summary:
- "In this session, Dr. Arthur M. Nezu applies an emotion-centered problem-solving approach when working with a newly-divorced White adult man who recently left the military and moved in with his recently-divorced girlfriend and her two young children. Since these transitions, the client shares that he is annoyed and irritated at home because he is unfamiliar living with children and has lost quality time with his girlfriend. Nezu learns that the client has had suicidal thoughts for the majority of his life and has attempted to kill himself three times. Nezu highlights the client's coping strategies that have worked and suggests that the client continue to apply them. Together, the two create additional coping strategies that can be realistically implemented when a triggering event occurs. Moreover, Nezu explains to the client that his stress is not only a psychological response, but also a bodily response to stressful encounters. Accordingly, Nezu demonstrates an evidenced-based technique, and the two practice it during session. At the conclusion of this session, the client shares what he has learned. In response, Nezu strongly encourages the client to be proactive with his strategies and not reactive"
