Summary:
"Using an emotion-focused problem-solving therapeutic approach, Dr. Christine M. Nezu works with a Mexican American young adult woman who seeks to understand and cope with avoidance, academic stress, anxiety, and depression. First, Nezu identifies a treatment goal by gathering additional information regarding the client's anxiety and depression, family upbringing, and current coping strategies. Having previously reviewed a pre-session intake survey, Nezu follows up with the client on her past self-reported childhood sexual trauma. Seamlessly, by asking the client to elaborate on her experiences, Nezu challenges the client's distorted thinking, negative self-talk, and internalization of negative messages that have affected how the client views herself. Connecting the client's experiences, Nezu explains the fight/flight/freeze response, the automatic body responses that occur when one encounters stressful situations. While highlighting and reinforcing the client's adaptive coping strategies, Nezu and the client generate and later practice new strategies. Finally, Nezu empowers the client by reminding her of how far she has come and how she can use these additional coping skills to move forward"
