- Summary:
- "Dr. John Curry teaches cognitive-behavioral therapeutic strategies to an adolescent male client with depression due to several factors: academic stress, the recent suicide of a friend, and a difficult relationship with his father, who is in and out of the client's life. First, Curry and the client explore the underlying thoughts associated with the client's depression, and Curry introduces the client to the "Depression Triangle," a visual demonstration of one's thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. He shares that the first component of cognitive behavioral therapy involves monitoring emotions to determine when and why they become more positive or negative. Next, Curry helps the client begin this process by writing and ranking events in the past week using an "Emotion Thermometer" worksheet and later encourages the client to monitor his mood using this worksheet. Curry then explains to the client that changing behaviors can likely change one's mood. Then, Curry and the client generate a list of activities that the client finds pleasurable and assess the amount of engagement the client has with these activities. The two make a behavioral contract specifying when the pleasurable actions can take place and what rewards can happen when the actions are done. At the end of the session, Curry reviews what was covered in session and suggests that continuing to follow these actions will benefit the client"
