- Summary:
- "In this session, Dr. Ellen Wachtel works with a young, Black, married couple, who have a 3-year-old son and are pregnant with their second child. The therapist begins the session by asking each of them to give a brief account of what they feel are the main difficulties in their marriage. The woman notes issues with communication, describing herself as a "pursuer" and her husband as a "distancer" when they have arguments. She also describes concerns related to their roles in the marriage, given that she is a stay-at-home mother and part-time master's student in counseling, while he works a full-time job. Her husband proceeds to describe early tension between himself and his wife's family of origin as another concern, noting that he is a "religious man" and that he believes the couple should come first. The therapist then asks each person to share what they value in the other individual and helps the couple identify strengths in the foundation of the relationship that they can fall back on. The couple then begins to discuss the financial strain that arises as a result of living on only one source of income, but both of them express hopefulness, as she is planning to graduate with her master's degree later this year. Dr. Wachtel has the couple walk her through a recent argument and provide their unique perspectives on the incident. As the session comes to a close, Dr. Wachtel summarizes some of the couple's concerns, but notes the progress they have made, as well as a number of strengths she observes in their relationship. She concludes the session by encouraging them to maintain their healthy habits of communication and conflict resolution"
