Summary:
"Using cognitive behavior therapy, Dr. Jonathan Abramowitz works with a white male client in his 50s who suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder and resulting anxiety. Abramowitz first uses psychoeducation to teach the client about his cyclical thoughts and behaviors. He primarily employs exposure therapy and response prevention to help the client sever the association between his thoughts and behaviors. Abramowitz encourages the client to write a fictitious story about leaving his apartment without checking the stove and coming back to witness everything on fire, a typical scenario he fears that causes him anxiety. After the client reads his story, they discuss the benefits of repeatedly confronting his fear by leaving his apartment without checking the stove. Toward the end of the session, Abramowitz explains a classic acceptance and commitment therapy metaphor called "Passengers on a Bus" that helps the client better understand his internal experience. The client realistically admits that changing his response will be difficult, but expresses optimism for his ability to do so over time with repeated practice"
