Summary:
"Dr. Malin Fors works with an African American woman in her thirties who is experiencing discrimination for her invisible disability. In addition to single parenting five sons, the client suffers from fibromyalgia symptoms of migraines, vertigo, pain, lethargy, and insomnia. Perhaps even more painful than the actual disorder is the lack of empathy from those around her. As she recounts her experiences with disability discrimination in the workforce and the invalidating response of others, Dr. Fors validates her pain and frustration. The client subsequently discloses several experiences of trauma, including a third-degree burn at the age of three, numerous instances of sexual abuse, a mother who has had cancer throughout the client's life, and racism. Despite her feelings of enduring isolation and invalidation, the client draws on personal resources of strength and resilience. Dr. Fors emphasizes the client's desire to be seen and recognized for her inordinate pain and serves as a witness to the client's experience"
