Summary:
"Dr. Beth Darnall works with an elderly African American man suffering from 27 years of chronic pain induced by a motor vehicle accident. After recounting the accident in detail, the client discusses his subsequent anxiety in specific driving situations and describes his coping skills for alleviating the anxiety and pain. Dr. Darnall emphasizes the importance of enlisting a trusted healthcare team, finding the balance between activity and over-exertion, and maintaining strong social support, reinforcing several of the strategies the client has already employed. In addition to his physical pain in his back, hip, leg, and shoulder, the client shares his emotional pain following the loss of his wife of 60 years. Throughout the session, Dr. Darnall validates his pain, recommends involvement with support groups, gives positive feedback for his current coping strategies, and provides psychoeducation on the psychology of pain"
