- Summary:
- "In this session, applying an integrative healing family assimilative therapeutic approach, Dr. Patricia J. Pitta works with a young adult, white heterosexual couple who have recently transitioned to a long-distance relationship after two years of dating. First, Dr. Pitta introduces herself and reviews the presenting concerns from her intake paperwork, which indicates that the couple hope to work on communication issues due to a new transition in their relationship and the male client's academic-related stress. Dr. Pitta and the clients identify and explore thoughts, emotions, and behaviors derived from their families of origin, making connections to how these factors currently impact the couple's relationships and concerns. Next, Dr. Pitta asks the couple to share their own perspectives of each of their concerns and gathers detailed information of each client's family history and ethnic backgrounds. While the female client describes her family history of anxiety and treatment, the male client recognizes that his family does not discuss their problems or seek treatment for ongoing anxiety or depressive problems. It is revealed that the male client is mourning his brother's death from drug abuse, resulting in anxiety that disrupts his relationship with his girlfriend. At the end of the session, Dr. Pitta offers her recommendations to the couple"
