- Summary:
- "In this session, Dr. Mary A. Fristad demonstrates one stage of a multi-prong, manualized psychoeducational psychotherapy approach for childhood depression with a girl who is currently in the sixth-grade. The child presents with sleep issues, sad feelings, and loneliness (i.e., depression). After briefly checking in about the past week's events with the client and her father together, Dr. Fristad dismisses the father and spends most of the session with the client. Throughout the session, Dr. Fristad and the client use a workbook that contains activities and other information. After gauging the client's current mood and stress level using a feelings chart and thermometer, Dr. Fristad reviews the previous session's homework assignment. She then teaches new content, focusing on the creation of a tool kit with coping strategies that the client can access and apply when experiencing depression symptoms. The tool kit involves four strategies: Creative, Active, R&R, and Social (CARS). The two jointly generate resources and activities; brainstorm how to remember to use these skills; and roleplay a few of the strategies in session. Then Dr. Fristad assigns homework: the client should fill a box with representations of her strategies, i.e., adding paper for drawing, and a book for reading. Near the end of the session, the father rejoins the session, and the client teaches him what she learned in session and her "project" (i.e., homework) for the next week. Finally, Dr. Fristad invites the father and daughter to ask any questions regarding the strategies and how to implement them. Note: this demonstration features actors portraying clients based on composite case material"
