- Summary:
- "In this session, Dr. Julian D. Ford works with an older adult, Black, male Vietnam veteran presenting with posttraumatic stress, anxiety, and depression. Ford uses a transtheoretical transdiagnostic psychotherapeutic approach, named Trauma Affect Regulation Guide for Education and Therapy (TARGET). First, Dr. Ford assesses the client's presenting concerns, which include alertness, startle reflex, and anxiety. He also discusses the ways in which the client's symptoms have changed and affected his life over the past 50 years. Throughout the session, Dr. Ford uses attending skills, such as reflecting and paraphrasing the client's thoughts and emotions. Dr. Ford asks clarifying questions to understand the client's experiences when serving in the military as a young single Black man. He also discusses some of the client's coping mechanisms, such as writing a book about his combat experiences. The two identify and explore the client's values and the conflict of these values with the client's behavior during his service in Vietnam, focusing on how these experiences may have led the client to stay in posttraumatic survival mode for decades. Dr. Ford educates the client about his anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress responses--connecting biopsychological, cognitive, and affective perspectives. At the end of the session, Dr. Ford identifies and acknowledges the client's strengths and his wishes for the client's future"
