Summary:
"Integrating multimodal and gender-based psychotherapeutic approaches, Dr. Andrew P. Smiler works with a 19-year-old African-American man who presents with anger management issues. To build rapport with the client, Dr. Smiler spends most of the session getting to know the positive things that are going on in the client's life, including learning about the client's strengths, hobbies, and important relationships. He also discusses the client's occupational and other life aspirations. Through this continued exploration, Dr. Smiler ascertains the client's mental health and psychiatric history, including past instances of maladaptive externalizing behaviors. Later, the client discloses that his father, to whom he was close, has recently died from cancer. As a response, Dr. Smiler assesses the client's social support system, his grieving process, and triggers that cause the client to become angry. Toward the end of the session, the two focus on therapeutic goals, such as anger management"
