Summary:
"In this session, Dr. Ladislav Timulak demonstrates emotion-focused therapy with an African American male client who is a military veteran with a physical disability. The client wishes to explore difficulties he is having in feeling and identifying his emotions, which he attributes to his experience and training in the military. The therapist helps the client explore specific examples of his perceived apathy, as well as an early childhood memory of bullying. Dr. Timulak also uses the empty chair technique on several occasions to help the client explore various relationships throughout his life, including his relationship with his father and his marriage with his second wife. Throughout the session, the client displays considerable resistance to emotional exploration and expression. The therapist navigates this resistance and helps the client begin to identify how experiences throughout his life have taught him how "not feeling" can keep him safe, how this was reinforced through his time in the military, and how his distance from his own emotions has impacted other relationships"
