Summary:
Dr. Kari A. Gleiser begins therapy with a client who presents as an older Black woman. The client expresses that she recently has been reflecting on her childhood, where at the age of 7 her mother taught her to cook and care for all of her brothers and sisters. The client laments feeling like she had no childhood, and together she and Gleiser process the client's feelings related to being given so many responsibilities as such a young child. Gleiser uses accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy (AEDP) to assist the client with connecting herself to her past self when she was 7-years-old, and validates the client's feelings of sadness due to what felt like a lost childhood. Additionally, Gleiser encourages the client to get in touch with her feelings of anger and frustration with her mother for being absent much of the time. During the last few minutes of the session, Gleiser and the client reflect on their work in this session, and express appreciation for this opportunity to share this moment together
