- Summary:
- Orah T. Krug begins therapy with a young woman of color who presents with anxiety related to a constant concern about accidentally hurting or bothering others she has personal relationships with. Krug uses existential humanistic therapy to help the client identify her own critical voice about feeling negative emotions, such as sadness or anger. Krug facilitates an experiential process through which Krug and the client begin to engage with the critical voice and explore the utility of it in the client's life. The client becomes tearful and expresses fear that without the critical voice, she might not be able to attend to social cues that others are upset with her. Krug helps the client identify her conflict between feeling negative emotions at times and not allowing herself to recognize them out of fear that she will upset others. Krug and the client explore this insight in the context of the client's relationship with her mother, who was absent a lot during the client's childhood. The client reports that whenever she expresses negative emotions with her mother, her mother invalidates the client's emotions. Krug encourages the client to begin to recognize and validate her own feelings outside of the session
