Summary:
"In this session, Dr. David N. Elkins uses a humanistic and common factors psychotherapy approach with an African American single man in his thirties. The client presents with a lack of fulfillment in his accomplished professional life as well as his personal life as a single, unattached person; he also acknowledges anxiety related to a potential, but as yet unknown, career change. Providing a warm, supportive, and welcoming space, Dr. Elkins first explores with the client his presenting issues by asking open-ended questions. The client and Dr. Elkins explore and discuss the client's need for accomplishment, his racial identity and its connection to achievement, and his hope for a family. Dr. Elkins also acknowledges the racial differences between himself and the client, using a variety of self-disclosure techniques to build a relationship with the client. At the conclusion of the session, Dr. Elkins invites the client to provide him feedback on how well the client felt Dr. Elkins understood the client. This demonstration features an actor portraying a client on the basis of a composite of case material"
