Summary:
"In this session, Dr. David N. Elkins applies a humanistic and common factors psychotherapy approach with a young adult, white, heterosexual woman. The client presents with managing an unplanned pregnancy and is conflicted on whether she wants her alcoholic mother to be involved in her child's life. Providing a warm, supportive, and welcoming space, Dr. Elkins first explores with the client her presenting issues by asking open-ended questions. Dr. Elkins and the client then jointly clarify the issues and identify an area to focus on for the remainder of the session. The client reports that she identifies how to have her alcoholic mother (who was neglectful towards the client when she was a child) involved with her future child's and boyfriend's life. Dr. Elkins assists the client in working through her fear and anxiety related to her pregnancy by clarifying, reflecting feelings, and summarizing. Through the session, Dr. Elkins checks in with the client to see if he accurately understands the client's experiences. He then asks the client to identify other social relationships that will be supportive to her. At the conclusion of the session, Dr. Elkins invites the client to provide him feedback on how well the client felt Dr. Elkins understood the client. This demonstration features an actor portraying a client on the basis of a composite of case material"
